Mike Higgins' Cook Box
The "design" for my cookbox was inspired by the patrol box many of us used as Boy Scouts. Like most things I
build, I didn't start with a design. The external dimensions were set by the size of the storage space available in
my boat. The box was assembled around this constraint, using left over wood and hardware I had in the shop.

The stove itself is the Primus Yellowstone Classic Trail Stove, which uses a standard compressed gas canister. I
would have preferred to a stove that didn't depend on a canister (e.g., Coleman Exponent Feather 442 Dual Fuel
Backpacking Stove). However, I am not comfortable with the thought of liquid fuel on a wooden boat.

Those of you with access to back issues of Small Craft Advisory can read about a more elaborate approach to
this problem in Issue 33. An article by Conbert Beenneck describes a comprehensive "gourmet" cooking setup
based on a standard toolbox that contains more equipment than found in most homes.

(Editors note: Back copies of Issue 33 are available from Small Craft Advisor Magazine
HERE. )

I opted for a minimalist approached based on two nesting back packing pots and a few assorted utensils.

Currently I am writing a how-to-build-it article for Small Craft Advisory. The attachment is the initial drawing I
have developed for that article.
